2009.01.26, the most important holiday in Taiwan & China is the Lunar New Year. Since it is based on the lunar calendar, it comes about a month later than the Western New Year. The Chinese New Year season traditionally lasts about a month . The period has now been reduced to a week or less. There are some parallels with the Western New Year: houses are cleaned thoroughly, for instance, and families all get together for the festivities. All debts must be paid off so that new year can be started with a fresh beginning. Feasts are enjoyed with family and friends, and there are lively dragon and lion dances in the streets. Everywhere there is the sound of fire cracker explosions. Children receive gifts of little red envelopes with money inside them.

Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. The earliest paintings were not representational but ornamental; they consisted of patterns or designs rather than pictures. Stone Age pottery was painted with spirals, zigzags, dots, or animals. It was only during the Warring States Period (403-221 B.C.) that artists began to represent the world around them.

At New Year’s time most Chinese families paste signs on and around the front doors of their homes. These signs consist of black or gold Chinese characters written on squares or strips of red paper, because red is a happy color which brings good luck. The New Year sayings written on them are usually good luck phrases, or words related to spring—a symbol or new growth, new hope, new beginnings—since in China the New Year also marks the beginning of spring. On New Year’s Day people dress in their best clothes to go visiting relatives and friends, wishing everyone they meet a Happy New Year. Most shops are closed on this day; some stay closed for three days some up to a week, and then open their doors to the new year with the explosion of long strings of fire crackers.

Google Street View is a feature of Google Maps and Google Earth that provides 360° horizontal and 290° vertical panoramic street level views and allows users to view parts of some regions of the world at ground level. When it was launched on May 25, 2007, only five American cities were included. It has since expanded to thousands of locations in the United States, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, and includes a variety of urban and rural areas.
Google Street View displays photos taken from a fleet of Chevrolet Cobalts in United States and Opel Astras in Europe, mounted with spherical cameras and placed in 'image orbs' within Google's maps, displayed against the backdrop of images previously taken from satellite that make up Google's maps. These 'image orbs' can be navigated using either the arrow keys on the keyboard or by using a mouse to click on arrows displayed on the screen. Using these devices, the photos can be viewed in different sizes, from any direction, and from a variety of angles. Lines that are displayed along the street that is shown indicate the direction followed by that street view camera car.
Google has demonstrated Street View on prototype phones running Google's Android OS[citation needed], and is a part of the Google Maps program pre-installed on the T-Mobile G1. On November 21, 2008, Street View was added to the Maps application installed on Apple's iPhone. On December 10, 2008, Street View was added to the Maps application for S60 3rd Edition.

Back to work after beach vocation

International star Zhang Ziyi is back in China for the filming of the romantic comedy "Sophie's Revenge" after a paparazzi-haunted New Year holiday with her fiance Vivi Nevo on the Caribbean island of St Barts.

Although the paparazzi snaps revealing pictures of her and Vivi Nevo provoked strong reactions on the internet, Zhang was not too bothered by it and continued her work, sina.com quoted a production team member as saying.
Zhang Ziyi co-stars in the movie with Chinese actress Fan Bingbing and South Korean actor So Jisub. It is also the first movie she is producing.

The joint China-South Korean project started last November in Beijing and moved to the neighbouring city of Tianjin in the new year. The movie is slated for screening at the end of 2009.
